This issue of illegal short-term rental at 5 Glenelia Ave - also known as the 'party house' - was communicated to our office back in 2015. From that time on, we have worked persistently with the City's Municipal Licensing and Standards Division (MLS) to address the blatant contravention of the zoning by-law, and the threats to neighbourhood security and cohesion.
As a result of MLS becoming directly involved with investigating and monitoring activity on the property, the situation has been managed effectively. Our office stopped receiving complaints about the property. Now, thanks to the perseverance of all staff involved, the City has succeeded in convicting the property owner of violating the zoning by-law in utilizing the house for short-term rental.
This represents the first conviction on a Toronto property operating through vacation rental platforms such as AirBNB or VRBO. A condition for the upcoming sentencing will be an agreement of sale on the house. This will help restore the street to a more stable situation. MLS will continue to monitor the property to ensure that there's no sign of a return to short-term rental.
