Rehabilitation of Highway 401 Westbound Collector, Bayview Ave to Jane St

Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study - Rehabilitation of the Highway 401 Westbound Collector, Bayview Ave to Jane St

What is an Environmental Assessment (EA)?

An EA refers to the process meant to ensure that all potential environmental impacts are considered prior to a major infrastructure project beginning. In this case, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation has retained MMM Group to carry out the EA. It includes a Design Construction Report, which will outline relevant details and considerations, and available for 30-day public review.

What work is being done?

The proposed work includes the following:

  1. Resurfacing of existing pavement

  2. Rehabilitation of structures including bridges and retaining walls

  3. Potential traffic signal and geometric improvements at eastbound and westbound off-ramp intersections with Bayview Ave

  4. Review of underpass illumination, noise barrier walls, signage and roadside safety elements to determine additional work if required

There will be no road widening, new interchanges or on/off ramps. Ramp closures will be necessary at times , but signed detour routes will be implemented.

When is it taking place?

Most of the work will be done at night, as to increase productivity and minimize traffic impacts. The plan is for no daytime lane closures during the week, with some possible on weekends.

The first phase of the project is planned during 2016-2017 and includes the Bayview Ave to Allen Rd portion fo the 401. The second phase, from Allen Rd to Jane St, is scheduled for 2018-2020.
